The view to the right shows the Model VT-1 antenna enclosure with
the electronics module removed, which reveals the reflector board
inside. The reflector board is fundamental to the design and
operation of the Model VT-1. It is positioned at an angle of 35
degrees from the horizontal which enables
the phased array to be positioned 20 degrees from the vertical.
Thus, the Model VT-1 phased array points slightly downward,
preventing rainfall, snow and debris from collecting inside the
antenna elements or on the antenna plane. With this design, ordinary
piezo tweeters can be used for the antenna elements. Also, in cold
climates, the reflector board rather than the phased array is heated
to prevent snow and ice buildup, which would absorb the sodar signal
and degrade system performance. As shown in the picture, the inside
surfaces of the enclosure are foam lined to absorb side-lobe energy.
The reflector board design along with the foam-lined enclosure that
surrounds the antenna make the Model VT-1 almost immune to
interference from side-lobe echoes. Thus, the Model VT-1 can be used
successfully at virtually any location.
